Afton Ward, Isle of Wight NHS Trust Case Study
Afton Ward is a 10 bedded acute admission unit for older people experiencing severe mental health problems, based at St Marys Hospital on the Isle of Wight. It has low levels of restrictive practice but the team were keen to join the national programme and think about ways to improve the experience for the patients and workforce. Project leads spent time talking to staff and patients to understand what were priorities for change ideas and after a workshop, decided to focus on 2 areas : Person centred care and active participants in care. Changes included increased activities on the ward, including VR headsets and one pager profiles for patients to support personalised care.
